History of the Ronald McDonald House of Tulsa

The concept of the Ronald McDonald House, like so many other historical contributions, began in the city of Philadelphia in 1974. The Philadelphia Eagles and the McDonald's restaurant owners combined their energies to assist Dr. Audrey Evans of the Children's Hospital Oncology Service in doing something for her patients and for the families of children with cancer. With the development of the "half-way" house under the name of the friendly clown, Ronald McDonald, the families could stay in comfort and convenience while the children were in the hospital or receiving outpatient therapy.

It does not seem that long ago when an energetic crew of community volunteers established TLC, Inc. in late 1987 (after 2 years of steady research) to pursue the dream of building a Tulsa Ronald McDonald House. Enthusiasm quickly spread and the list of volunteers, groups, businesses and foundations all wanting to be part of such a vital project grew - all participating with the proud outlook of true visionaries.

The vision was replaced with reality when a 14 bedroom facility with play areas, a kitchen and two living areas opened its doors for the first families in need on October 4, 1991. As the Tulsa area hospitals and the surrounding communities embraced this "Home-Away-from-home", it became obvious that many more rooms were needed to accommodate those in crisis. So, in 2003 the House added 10 more bedrooms. To date, the House has served over 4500 families, totaling over 18,000 individuals!!

The incredible fact that the majority of original board members, community volunteers, groups and businesses are still involved with the House is a true testament to the magnitude of our mission - to serve seriously ill or injured children and their families traveling to Tulsa for medical treatment.

The united effort is still present as volunteers continue to join forces in many ways to help provide the best House possible - whether serving as board members; working in the House; cooking meals for families; participating in fundraisers; or donating goods or services.

"When you get involved with the Tulsa Ronald McDonald House, it becomes a part of your life. Supporters become so connected with the mission and the camaraderie of the group that it becomes like an extended family - a huge circle of friends with a common, undying bond," stated CEO/President, Glenda Love, who has served in this position since the doors opened.

This is the House where families meet to continue their lives
To eat and sleep.
To find their strengths & dry their tears.
To look forward with hope to better years.
This is the House That becomes their home.
This is the House "That Love Built"
