The
concept of the Ronald McDonald House, like so many other historical
contributions, began in the city of Philadelphia in 1974. The
Philadelphia Eagles and the McDonald's restaurant owners combined
their energies to assist Dr. Audrey Evans of the Children’s
Hospital Oncology Service in doing something for her patients
and for the families of children with cancer. With the development
of a “half-way” house under the name of the friendly
clown, Ronald McDonald, the families could stay in comfort and
convenience while the children were in the hospital or receiving
outpatient therapy.
It does not seem that long ago when an energetic crew of community
volunteers established TLC, Inc. in late 1987 (after two years
of steady research) to pursue the dream of building a Tulsa Ronald
McDonald House. Enthusiasm quickly spread and the list of volunteers,
groups, businesses and foundations all wanting to be part of such
a vital project grew – all participating with the proud
outlook of true visionaries.
The vision was replaced with reality when the doors to the Tulsa
Ronald McDonald House opened for the first families on October
4, 1991. The House has already served over 3,000 families, totaling
over 13,000 individuals!
The incredible fact that the majority of original board members,
community volunteers, groups and businesses are still involved
with the House is a true testament to the magnitude of our mission
– to serve seriously ill or injured children and their families
traveling to Tulsa for medical treatment.
The united effort is still present as volunteers continue to join
forces in many ways to help provide the best House possible –
whether serving as board members; working in the House; cooking
meals for families; participating in fund raisers; or donating
goods or services.
“When you get involved with the Tulsa Ronald McDonald House,
it becomes a part of your life. Supporters become so connected
with the mission and the camaraderie of the group that it becomes
like an extended family – a huge circle of friends with
a common, undying bond,” stated Executive Director Glenda
Love, who has served in this position since the doors opened.
A decade of memories and friendship…a decade of striving
to help families in need…a decade of proud service…a
decade of devotion.
